About This Business

HABATAT Galleries is a pioneering force in the world of contemporary glass art, with a rich history dating back to 1971. As the oldest glass gallery in the United States, it has been dedicated to representing the finest glass art from around the globe. The gallery's passion for glass art is evident in its extensive collection, which showcases a wide range of techniques and styles, from traditional to innovative. With a focus on helping collectors add world-class pieces to their collections, HABATAT Galleries has become a go-to destination for those seeking unique and exceptional glass art. The gallery's commitment to showcasing leading talents in the glass art domain is exemplified by its representation of artists such as Jon Kuhn, a pioneer in cold sculpted glass. The gallery's collection is a testament to the versatility of glass as a medium for artistic expression, with pieces that transform and come alive when exposed to light, offering viewers an immersive and endlessly inspiring experience. Founded by Linda and Thomas Boone, and Ferdinand Hampson in Dearborn, Michigan, HABATAT Galleries has a long history of innovation and excellence. Initially, the gallery showcased a wide range of artistic mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, clay, fiber, folk art, and art furniture. However, glass art quickly became a significant part of their portfolio, and in 1972, the gallery hosted the first Annual National (now International) Glass Invitational, which has since become the world's oldest and most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to contemporary glass art. This event has featured all the major artists in the field and continues to be a highlight of the gallery's calendar. With its move to Lathrup Village, Michigan in 1981, HABATAT Galleries has continued to evolve and grow, remaining at the forefront of the glass art scene. Today, the gallery remains committed to its mission of showcasing the finest glass art in the world, and its collection is a testament to the power and beauty of this unique and captivating medium. Whether you are a seasoned collector or simply a lover of glass art, HABATAT Galleries is a must-visit destination, offering a unique and unforgettable experience that will leave you inspired and in awe of the beauty and versatility of glass.

Underwhelming Experience at a Legendary Gallery

I must admit, I was thoroughly unimpressed by my recent visit to HABATAT Galleries. As a long-time enthusiast of contemporary glass art, I had high expectations for this pioneering institution. Unfortunately, the gallery's extensive collection, while showcasing a range of techniques and styles, felt somewhat stagnant and uninspired. The pieces on display, although technically proficient, lacked a certain je ne sais quoi that I've come to associate with truly exceptional glass art. The gallery's representation of leading talents in the field, such as Jon Kuhn, was notable, but even these works failed to leave a lasting impression on me. Perhaps my disappointment stems from the fact that I've had the privilege of experiencing some of the most innovative and groundbreaking glass art exhibitions in recent years, and HABATAT Galleries, despite its rich history and commitment to the medium, simply didn't measure up. The gallery's move to Lathrup Village, Michigan, may have brought about some changes, but it seems that the institution is still struggling to find its footing in the modern art world. As a seasoned collector and aficionado of glass art, I would caution others to temper their expectations when visiting HABATAT Galleries. While the gallery's collection is undoubtedly impressive in its scope and breadth, it lacks the spark and creativity that truly sets exceptional art apart from the mundane. In short, my experience at HABATAT Galleries was a resounding meh – not bad, not good, just a middling, unremarkable experience that failed to inspire or awe.
