June 06, 2025Disappointing Experience with Arts Out Loud
I was really looking forward to being a part of the Arts Out Loud community, but unfortunately, my experience was a letdown. As a young LGBTQ artist, I thought I would find a safe and supportive space to express myself, but what I found was a lack of organization and unclear communication. The scholarship application process was confusing, and it took weeks to get a response. When I finally did, it was a generic email that didn't even address my questions. I was expecting more personalized attention and guidance from the mentors, but it felt like they were too busy to really invest in us. The educational outreach programs were also not as comprehensive as I had hoped. It felt like they were just scratching the surface of the topics, without really diving deep into the issues that matter most to us. I understand that Arts Out Loud is a non-profit and that they rely on donations, but as a recipient of their services, I expected more. The fact that they use 100% of donations to fund their programs is great, but it doesn't excuse the lack of attention to detail and care in their execution. Maybe I just had high expectations, but I felt like Arts Out Loud could do better. For now, I'm taking my talents (and my donation dollars) elsewhere.
