June 06, 2025Disappointing Experience with the Aerial Robotics Club
I was really excited to join the Aerial Robotics Club at NC State, given their impressive track record in competitions and innovative projects. However, my experience was a letdown. As a computer science major, I was looking forward to contributing my skills to their autonomous search and rescue aerial systems. Unfortunately, the club's focus seemed more on winning competitions than on fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. The officers, including the President and Vice President, appeared to be more concerned with their own projects and didn't provide adequate guidance or support to new members. I felt like I was just an extra pair of hands to help with their competitions, rather than a valued team member. The Kavik Airframe project, which I was initially excited about, turned out to be a frustrating experience due to poor communication and lack of clear goals. Despite their claims of a welcoming environment, I found it difficult to connect with other members, and the overall atmosphere felt cliquey. As someone who is passionate about aerial robotics, I was disappointed by the lack of opportunities for growth and learning within the club. Unless they address these issues, I would not recommend the Aerial Robotics Club at NC State to others.
