Underwhelming Experience Left Me Feeling Tokenized
I visited the American Indian Resource Center with an open heart and mind, eager to dive into the rich cultural heritage of Native American communities. Unfortunately, the experience felt more like a dusty relic of the past than a vibrant celebration of indigenous cultures. The collection, while extensive, seemed disorganized and lacking in contemporary perspectives. I was disappointed to find that many of the resources were outdated, with some materials dating back to the 80s and 90s. The staff, although well-intentioned, seemed more focused on checking boxes for diversity initiatives rather than genuinely engaging with the community. As a Native American myself, I felt tokenized by the center's attempts to 'celebrate' our heritage without truly involving us in the process. The observance of Native American Heritage Month felt like a shallow gesture, rather than a meaningful commitment to understanding and empowerment. Overall, I left feeling underwhelmed and uninspired, wondering if this center is truly dedicated to serving the needs of Native American communities or just paying lip service to diversity and inclusion.
