Ripple in the Water: Disappointment at YMCA Camp Cory
I'm still trying to process the underwhelming experience my child had at YMCA Camp Cory. As a parent, it's heartbreaking to see your kid come back from a summer camp with a 'meh' attitude, especially when you've heard so many wonderful things about the place. The lakeside setting is undeniably beautiful, but it seems like the camp relies too heavily on its natural charm rather than investing in meaningful programs and activities. My child reported that many of the activities felt disorganized and that the counselors, although well-intentioned, seemed overwhelmed and struggled to engage the kids. The emphasis on 'achievement, independence, friendship, and belonging' sounds great on paper, but in practice, it felt like these values were merely buzzwords rather than guiding principles. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect was the lack of follow-through on recognizing and celebrating each child's unique strengths and accomplishments. My child, who thrives on positive reinforcement, felt unnoticed and unappreciated. For a camp that prides itself on creating a 'safe and supportive environment,' it was surprising to see such a lack of personal touch and genuine care. Unless they revamp their approach to focus more on the individual needs and experiences of their campers, I would caution parents against expecting the 'lifetime of memories' that YMCA Camp Cory promises.
