About This Business

The AL Rae Centre for Genetics and Breeding is a world-leading research institution focused on genetics and genomics, with a specific emphasis on projects that benefit New Zealand's agricultural and primary industries. The centre's mission is to conduct cutting-edge research that advances breeding practices and increases returns from New Zealand's primary industries. Their work spans a range of domestic animal species, including cattle, sheep, goats, and dogs, as well as fundamental plant and animal genetics and practical applications of genomic data. By leveraging large-scale genotype and sequence-based datasets and employing state-of-the-art statistical and molecular techniques, the centre aims to make a significant impact on the industry. One of their notable projects is a genetic study of New Zealand's iconic working farm dogs, the Huntaway and Heading dog breeds, in partnership with MPI and the SFF Futures fund. This study recognizes the uniqueness of New Zealand farm dogs and seeks to examine how genetics impacts disease and working performance. The centre is led by prominent researchers, including Professor Garrick, who has expertise in the development and implementation of national animal evaluation programs, performance recording databases, and breeding schemes. With a strong focus on both academic and industry research environments, the AL Rae Centre for Genetics and Breeding provides students with a wide range of project opportunities and the chance to work alongside partners in the field. The centre is committed to advancing the field of genetics and genomics and making a positive impact on New Zealand's primary industries.

Research Opportunities Lost in Bureaucratic Red Tape

As a postgraduate student interested in genetics and genomics, I was initially thrilled to discover the AL Rae Centre for Genetics and Breeding. The centre's mission to advance breeding practices and increase returns from New Zealand's primary industries aligns with my own research goals. However, my experience with the centre was underwhelming. Despite the impressive list of projects and partnerships, I found it challenging to get involved in any meaningful way. The application process for research opportunities was lengthy and cumbersome, with excessive emphasis on administrative tasks rather than the actual research. When I finally managed to secure a meeting with one of the prominent researchers, Professor Garrick, I was disappointed by the lack of clear communication regarding potential projects and collaboration opportunities. It seemed that the centre's focus on industry partnerships and funding often took precedence over supporting students and early-career researchers. The genetic study of New Zealand's working farm dogs, while interesting, seemed to be more of a publicity stunt than a genuine research effort. Overall, I would caution other students against getting their hopes up about working with the AL Rae Centre. While the centre's research goals are admirable, the bureaucratic hurdles and lack of support for emerging researchers make it a frustrating and unfulfilling experience.
