About This Business
Historic Highland Cemetery, situated just south of the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is the oldest surviving cemetery in East Baton Rouge Parish. With its first documented burials dating back to 1813, the cemetery holds significant historical value, including the resting places of two important Revolutionary War veterans. After facing periods of abandonment following the Civil War, the cemetery underwent attempts at restoration in the 1930s and 1970s. Currently, it is owned by St. Joseph Cathedral Roman Catholic Church, located in downtown Baton Rouge. Despite the distance between the cemetery and the church, it has been primarily maintained by the families and friends of those interred. The cemetery offers cremation and burial funeral services, complete with arrangements for cemetery and church services, funeral halls, equipment, and casket adornments to cater to various budgets. For those seeking immediate assistance during difficult times, Historic Highland Cemetery provides a reliable and compassionate service. The cemetery's rich history and archaeological significance make it a valuable part of the community's heritage. Visitors can explore the List Of Interred, learn about the cemetery's archaeology, and understand the importance of Highland Cemetery through various resources provided. For families and individuals facing grief, the cemetery offers individual, couples, and family counseling, as well as grief and healing services. With its commitment to helping families say their last farewells with dignity and respect, Historic Highland Cemetery stands as a testament to the community's history and a symbol of compassion and support during life's most challenging moments.

A Fading Testament to History, Overgrown and Forgotten
I visited Historic Highland Cemetery recently, hoping to pay my respects to the veterans and historical figures buried there. Unfortunately, my experience was marred by the evident neglect and disrepair of the cemetery. Despite its rich history, the grounds were overgrown, and many of the headstones were cracked, worn, or completely illegible. The paths were uneven and poorly maintained, making it difficult to navigate. It's disheartening to see such an important piece of our community's heritage being allowed to deteriorate in this way. The fact that it's primarily maintained by families and friends of those interred, rather than the owning church or local authorities, is a clear indication of a lack of institutional commitment to preserving this historical site. While I understand the significance of Historic Highland Cemetery and the services it offers, including cremation and burial options, counseling, and grief support, my visit was overshadowed by the sense of abandonment and disregard for the final resting places of so many. For a place that promises to help families say their last farewells with dignity and respect, it falls woefully short in its current state. Until significant efforts are made to restore and maintain this cemetery, I fear it will continue to fade into obscurity, a forgotten testament to our collective history.
