Disorganized Chaos: Dervish Disappoints
I stopped by Dervish Turkish Restaurant yesterday with high hopes, given its long-standing reputation in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. Unfortunately, my experience was a letdown from start to finish. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I was excited to dive into their array of Turkish Mediterranean specialties, but the execution fell flat. The mixed grill, which I was looking forward to, was overcooked and dry, lacking the juicy, smoky flavor I've come to expect from similar dishes. The service was also subpar; our server seemed overwhelmed, taking ages to take our orders and forgetting one of our appetizers altogether. The ambiance, while cozy, felt somewhat dated and in need of refreshment. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect was the lack of authenticity in the dishes. Having tried Turkish food in various parts of the world, I found Dervish's take to be somewhat Americanized and lacking in depth. The Beyran Soup, for instance, was too salty, and the Ottoman Salad, though fresh, was unremarkable. For a restaurant that boasts of traditional recipes passed down through generations, I expected more. Given the prices, I anticipated a higher quality of food and service. Unless they revamp their menu and service, I'd hesitate to recommend Dervish to anyone seeking an authentic Turkish culinary experience. Maybe I just caught them on an off day, but as it stands, Dervish Turkish Restaurant doesn't live up to its promise.
