About This Business
The SADC Business Council (SADC BC) is a regional apex body representing the private sector of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It comprises national and regional apex business associations from the 16 SADC Member States, making it the prime public sector partner in driving SADC development and integration. The SADC BC works closely with the private sector and other stakeholders to identify priority issues for policy advocacy, expose markets and investors to partnerships, and provide custom-tailored services driven by both industry and enterprise interests. One of the key strategies the SADC BC focuses on is the SADC Industrialization Strategy and Roadmap, which considers science, technology, and innovation, including digitalization, as essential for the region's growth. The council offers training workshops to stakeholders and co-organizes the annual SADC Industrialisation Week (SIW) with the SADC Secretariat and the host country. By providing access to the latest news and regular updates on legislative and regulatory developments in SADC, the SADC BC aims to foster a conducive business environment. The council is managed by a Board of Directors from the 16 national apex bodies from SADC and the Executive Committee (ExCo), ensuring a structured approach to its objectives. With its headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, the SADC BC is well-positioned to facilitate regional development and integration, making it a pivotal organization for businesses and investors looking to engage with the SADC region.

Disappointing Experience with SADC BC: Too Much Red Tape
I recently attended one of the SADC Business Council's training workshops, expecting to gain valuable insights and connections to boost my business in the region. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming. The event felt overly bureaucratic, with too much focus on policy jargon and not enough on practical, actionable advice for entrepreneurs like myself. The speakers, while knowledgeable, seemed more interested in showcasing their own accomplishments rather than providing tangible solutions to the challenges we face on the ground. The networking opportunities were also limited, with many attendees seeming more focused on their own cliques rather than genuinely engaging with others. For an organization that claims to be about driving SADC development and integration, I found the SADC BC to be surprisingly out of touch with the needs of small businesses and startups. Their website and communication channels could also be more user-friendly and responsive. Perhaps with some restructuring and a more grassroots approach, the SADC BC could live up to its potential and truly support the private sector in the SADC region.
