June 06, 2025Under Resourced and Overwhelmed: A Disappointing Experience
I visited the Zion-Benton Public Library with high hopes, but unfortunately, my experience was marred by several issues. Firstly, the library's hours of operation, although extensive, did not accommodate my needs as I required assistance outside of their curbside pickup times. The staff, while friendly, seemed overwhelmed and understaffed, leading to long wait times and a general sense of chaos. I was particularly disappointed by the lack of resources available for individuals with specific learning needs, which contradicts the library's mission to foster inclusivity and diversity. The library's collection, although rich, was not well-organized, making it difficult for me to find the materials I needed. Furthermore, the interlibrary loan services and remote printing options, although available, were not clearly explained, leading to confusion and frustration. As someone who values community engagement, I was also disappointed by the lack of engagement from the staff and the limited programs available for adults. The library's commitment to serving the community is admirable, but it falls short in execution. With some improvements to staffing, resource allocation, and program development, the Zion-Benton Public Library could truly become the vibrant community hub it aspires to be. Until then, I would caution others to manage their expectations and explore alternative options for their library needs.
