About This Business

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is a state agency responsible for building, maintaining, and operating Virginia's roads, bridges, and tunnels. With the third-largest state-maintained highway system in the country, VDOT plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout the state. Formed in 1906 as the State Highway Commission, VDOT has a long history of commitment to operating, maintaining, and continuously improving Virginia's state transportation system. The agency is guided by the 17-member Commonwealth Transportation Board and employs more than 8,000 people full-time. VDOT is divided into 9 highway districts, which are further divided into 31 residencies, each responsible for one to four counties. In addition to its highway maintenance and construction activities, VDOT also provides funding for airports, seaports, rail, and public transportation through the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The agency operates a network of safety rest areas and welcome centers along the state's highways, providing travelers with a safe and convenient place to rest and access information about local and state attractions. With a strong commitment to customer service and a culture of transparency, trust, and respect, VDOT works to ensure that Virginia's transportation system meets the needs of its citizens and supports the state's economic growth and development. The agency's welcome centers, such as the one located at mile marker 131 on Interstate 95, offer a wealth of information about local and state attractions, weather, and road conditions, and are staffed by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Whether you're a resident of Virginia or just visiting, VDOT is dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable travel experience. The agency's safety rest areas, such as those located at mile markers 154 and 155 on Interstate 95, are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and offer a range of amenities, including parking, restrooms, and vending machines. With its comprehensive network of highways, safety rest areas, and welcome centers, VDOT is an essential part of Virginia's transportation infrastructure, and plays a vital role in supporting the state's economy and quality of life.

Frustrating Experience with VDOT's Maintenance

I'm writing this review as a frustrated driver who's had the misfortune of dealing with the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) subpar maintenance of our state's roads. As someone who commutes daily, I've noticed the lack of attention to potholes and road damage, which not only damages my vehicle but also poses a safety risk. The constant construction on I-95, while appreciated in theory, seems to be never-ending and poorly managed, causing more congestion than relief. I've tried to contact VDOT multiple times to report issues, but my concerns have fallen on deaf ears. It's disappointing to see such a vital agency struggle with basic maintenance and customer service. With over 8,000 employees, you'd think they could do better. I hope VDOT takes these criticisms to heart and works towards improving their services for the sake of Virginia's drivers.
