The Big Greek Cafe
About This Business
The Big Greek Cafe is a family-owned restaurant chain that has been serving traditionally-inspired Greek dishes since 2009. The concept of the restaurant was born out of a family's passion for food and their desire to create a casual gathering place where relationships, family, and community can be built around delicious meals. The Marmaras family, who own and operate the restaurant, have a long history of working in the food industry, with the twin brothers Simos and Nikos having grown up working beside their father in his fine dining Greek restaurant. After their mother's passing in 2006, the brothers decided to start a new concept that would incorporate the family's authentic Greek recipes, which have been handed down through generations. The first unit of The Big Greek Cafe was opened in Silver Spring in 2009, and since then, the restaurant has expanded to multiple locations across Maryland and Virginia. The restaurant's menu features a variety of Greek dishes, including weekly specials created by the brothers' father, who can still be seen in the kitchen. The Big Greek Cafe prides itself on using superior ingredients, consistency, and staying true to the family's traditional recipes. The restaurant's mission is to provide a fun and casual environment where customers can build relationships and share meals with friends and family. The Big Greek Cafe is committed to delivering excellent quality standards and supporting the local community, just as Mama had always envisioned. With its rich history, delicious food, and welcoming atmosphere, The Big Greek Cafe has become a local favorite, and its owners are dedicated to continuing their mother's legacy of sharing Greek cuisine and culture with others.

June 06, 2025Disappointment in a Bowl of Lukewarm Avgolemono
I'm not one to typically write reviews, but my experience at The Big Greek Cafe was a letdown, to say the least. As a Greek myself, I was excited to try their take on traditional dishes, but it seems like they've lost sight of what makes Greek cuisine special. The atmosphere was lacking - it felt like a generic, casual dining spot rather than a cozy, family-owned restaurant. The service was slow, and our server seemed overwhelmed, even though it wasn't particularly busy. But the real disappointment was the food. I ordered the moussaka, which was dry and flavorless, and the spanakopita was nothing special. The avgolemono soup, which I was looking forward to, was lukewarm and lacked the brightness of a good lemon flavor. For a place that prides itself on using superior ingredients and staying true to traditional recipes, I expected a lot more. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day, but I won't be back to find out. With so many other great Greek places in the area, The Big Greek Cafe needs to step up its game if it wants to stay in the running.
