I've been a member of the Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association (OPCMIA) for a few years now, expecting a strong support system and resources to enhance my career as a skilled craftsman. Unfortunately, my experience has been nothing short of disappointing. Despite OPCMIA's claims of promoting excellence, safety, and fairness, I've found the organization to be somewhat detached from the needs of its members on the ground. The training programs, while well-intentioned, often feel outdated and not fully aligned with the current demands of the construction industry. Moreover, the political advocacy, although important, sometimes seems to overshadow the immediate concerns of members regarding better working conditions and fair wages. I've attended a couple of job fairs organized by OPCMIA, but the opportunities presented were not as plentiful or as promising as I had hoped. The magazine and legislative updates are informative, but they don't compensate for the lack of direct, tangible support for members. Overall, my time with OPCMIA has left me feeling that the organization could do more to genuinely support its members and live up to its mission statement. Until significant changes are made, I would find it challenging to recommend OPCMIA to fellow plasterers and cement masons seeking robust support and advocacy.
