Oakland Promise (OP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating equity and empowering Oakland's young people with opportunities to make a difference in their lives and in the world. Founded in 2016, OP strives to provide every child in Oakland with the financial resources, educational programming, mentorship, and supportive community needed to thrive in higher education and their chosen career. The organization's mission is to engage the Oakland community in advancing equity and economic mobility through cradle-to-college and career achievement, ensuring that every student has an equitable opportunity to enter and complete college and prepare for their chosen career. OP's programs are designed to support the education of young people at each stage of their growth, from birth to college and beyond. This includes providing college savings accounts, financial guidance, and community support to families with newborns, as well as scholarships, college and career readiness programming, and personalized support to high school students. Additionally, OP offers mentorship and persistence support to help college students finish their degrees. By providing these resources and support, OP aims to create a thriving Oakland community without barriers to educational opportunity, where every child can succeed and reach their full potential. With a focus on equity, OP works to give kids and their families the opportunity to make their promise a reality, and to create a brighter future for the city of Oakland. Through its programs and services, OP has already made a significant impact, with over 400 new high school graduates becoming OP college scholars each year, and thousands of students accessing scholarships, college and career readiness programming, and personalized support. As OP continues to grow and expand its reach, it remains committed to its mission of creating a more equitable and just society, where every child has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
