I've had the displeasure of witnessing the 'community-building' efforts of Mission Development Group LLC firsthand in San Antonio. As someone who's passionate about sustainable and equitable urban development, I was initially excited to see their projects take shape. However, the reality on the ground is far from their lofty mission statements. The 'Smart Growth objectives' they tout seem to be nothing more than a marketing gimmick, a way to slap a trendy label on developments that are, in essence, just more of the same gentrification we've seen in other cities. Their focus on 'underserved markets' sounds noble, but in practice, it translates to pushing out long-time residents and small businesses to make way for soulless, overpriced apartments and mixed-use projects that cater to a more affluent crowd. The fact that they've invested $345 million in Texas communities might sound impressive, but when you consider the lack of genuine community engagement and the prioritization of profit over people, it starts to look more like a recipe for disaster. I've seen how their construction management and P3 expertise have been used to fast-track projects without adequate consideration for the environmental impact or the needs of the existing community.
