June 06, 2025Nature Lovers Beware: Overhyped and Underwhelming Experience
I'm still trying to process the disappointment that was our recent stay at Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping. As avid campers and nature enthusiasts, we were drawn to the promise of a serene and immersive experience amidst the natural beauty of northern Michigan. What we got was a crowded, noisy, and overpriced campground that seemed more concerned with packing in as many RVs as possible than preserving the environment. The 'picturesque lakefront RV sites' we were promised turned out to be cramped and lacking in any real sense of privacy, with the constant hum of generators and chatter of neighboring campers making it impossible to truly connect with nature. The 'natural beaches' were nothing more than a small, rocky shoreline that was often crowded with people and littered with trash. We were also disappointed to find that the 'wide range of outdoor activities' consisted of little more than a few overpriced kayak rentals and a hiking trail that was poorly marked and maintained. Perhaps the most egregious issue, however, was the campground's blatant disregard for its own supposed commitment to sustainability. Despite the lofty language on their website, we witnessed numerous instances of waste and neglect, from overflowing trash cans to the destruction of native vegetation. It's clear that Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping is more interested in cashing in on its reputation as 'Michigan's Favorite Campground' than actually living up to its ideals. Unless they make some serious changes to address these issues, I would not recommend this campground to my worst enemy. One star, and that's being generous.
