Gallitzin Public Library
About This Business
The Gallitzin Public Library, located in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, is a community-driven institution that has been serving the public since its formal opening on February 7, 1957. With a rich history dating back to 1913, when the Gilson Sisters started a public library in the old Public School Building on Church Street, the library has undergone several transformations over the years. Initially maintained by the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association and later supported by the Gallitzin Women's Club, the library has always been a testament to the community's commitment to education and literacy. Today, the library operates from DeGol Plaza, Suite 304, at 11 Convent Street, offering a wide range of services and amenities, including free Wi-Fi, public computers, tours and group visits, printing, copying, and scanning, as well as public restrooms. The library's hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and it is closed on Sundays. The library can be contacted at (814) 886-4041 or via email at [email protected]. In addition to its core services, the library also participates in initiatives such as the Summer Youth Cafe, which provides healthy and free meals to children aged 18 and under during the summer months. The library's mission is to provide access to information, promote literacy, and foster a love of learning within the community. With its dedicated team and supportive community, the Gallitzin Public Library continues to thrive, offering a valuable resource for residents and visitors alike. The library's history and development are a reflection of the community's values and commitment to education, making it an integral part of Gallitzin's cultural and social fabric. As a hub for learning and community engagement, the Gallitzin Public Library remains a vital institution, providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for people of all ages to explore, discover, and grow.

June 06, 2025Disappointing Experience at a Once Beloved Institution
I'm writing this review with a heavy heart because the Gallitzin Public Library, a place I've cherished since childhood, has fallen short of my expectations. My recent visit was a letdown, to say the least. The library's hours of operation, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, seem reasonable, but the actual experience was anything but. The moment I stepped into the DeGol Plaza, Suite 304, location, I was hit with the musty smell of old books, which, while nostalgic, felt overwhelming. The free Wi-Fi, a service I was looking forward to, was sluggish and kept disconnecting. I attempted to use one of the public computers, but it was outdated and slow. The printing, copying, and scanning services, while available, were not user-friendly, and the staff seemed too busy to assist. I was disappointed to find that the library's participation in the Summer Youth Cafe, an initiative I admire, did not translate to a welcoming atmosphere for visitors of all ages. The public restrooms, although clean, were not well-maintained, with broken locks and inadequate supplies. What disturbed me most, however, was the lack of engagement from the staff. When I approached the desk to inquire about their services, I was met with a dismissive attitude and a clear lack of interest in helping me navigate their collections or programs. For a library that prides itself on fostering a love of learning and promoting literacy, the experience felt more like a chore than an invitation to explore. The Gallitzin Public Library's mission to provide access to information and promote literacy within the community is admirable, but my visit suggested that this mission is not being fulfilled as effectively as it could be. With some revitalization of their services, staff training, and a bit of modernization, I believe the Gallitzin Public Library could once again become the vibrant hub of learning and community engagement it strives to be. Until then, I'm left feeling disappointed and hopeful for a better future for this beloved institution.
