About This Business
Fairview Cemetery, located at 1134 Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a serene and historic sanctuary that spans four acres. This peaceful oasis, shaded by mature trees and filled with the scent of lilacs each spring, is the final resting place for approximately 3,700 individuals, including many notable Santa Fe residents and figures from New Mexico's history. The cemetery's rich history is marked by some of its oldest gravestones, which date back to the 1860s, originally from the downtown Masonic and Odd Fellows graveyard and relocated to Fairview between 1895 and 1901. Recognized for its historical significance, Fairview Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Today, the Fairview Cemetery Preservation Association, a 100% volunteer nonprofit organization, operates the cemetery, working tirelessly to maintain and preserve this important piece of Santa Fe's history. The association's efforts are driven by a mission to honor the lives and cherish the memories of those buried at Fairview, while also preserving the cemetery for future generations. For those interested in becoming part of this historic site, whether through volunteering or inquiring about available burial plots, the association can be reached via email at [email protected]. Fairview Cemetery is not only a place of remembrance but also a testament to the vibrant lives of Santa Fe's most notable residents, including artists, politicians, and community leaders. Visitors can explore the cemetery from 8am to dusk and discover the stories of those who have shaped the city's history. The cemetery's website also offers a 'Find a Grave' feature, allowing individuals to locate specific graves and learn more about the lives of those buried there. Furthermore, the association welcomes storytellers to volunteer and lead tours or write self-guided tours, providing an opportunity for the community to engage with the cemetery's rich history. With its commitment to preserving the past and honoring the memories of those who have come before, Fairview Cemetery stands as a poignant reminder of the importance of remembering and celebrating the lives of those who have shaped Santa Fe's vibrant cultural heritage.

June 06, 2025A Cemetery in Need of Care: My Disappointing Visit to Fairview
I visited Fairview Cemetery recently, expecting a serene and historic experience. Unfortunately, my visit was marred by the evident lack of maintenance and care. The once beautiful lilac bushes were overgrown, and the mature trees, while still majestic, were in dire need of pruning. The gravestones, including the historic ones from the 1860s, were not as well-preserved as I had hoped. It was disheartening to see the final resting place of so many notable Santa Fe residents and figures from New Mexico's history in such a state. The Fairview Cemetery Preservation Association, despite their mission to honor and preserve, seems to be struggling to maintain the grounds. As someone who appreciates history and the importance of remembering those who have come before us, it was saddening to see this piece of Santa Fe's history not being treated with the respect it deserves. Perhaps with more support and volunteers, Fairview Cemetery can return to its former glory. Until then, I can only hope that the stories of those buried here continue to be told and their memories cherished, despite the physical state of their resting place.
