June 06, 2025Unfulfilled Expectations in the Wairarapa Business Ecosystem
I recently had the opportunity to engage with Business Wairarapa, expecting a robust support system for my fledgling enterprise. Unfortunately, my experience was marred by unfulfilled promises and a lack of tangible benefits. The organization's mission to 'connect, advocate, and enable' sounds promising, but in practice, I found it challenging to navigate their services and truly feel supported. The 15 minutes of free HR and employment legal advice, while a good gesture, felt more like a teaser than a substantial offering. The member-to-member discounts were not as extensive as I had hoped, and the events, though well-attended, didn't provide the kind of networking opportunities I was seeking. Perhaps my expectations were too high, given the accolades and the mission statement. However, as a small business owner in the Wairarapa region, I need more than just a platform for connectivity; I need actionable advice, meaningful support, and a sense of community that actively lifts each other up. The annual Business Summit, themed 'Tell a Better Story,' sounds intriguing, but without more substantial engagement and follow-through from the organization, it feels like just another event rather than a catalyst for real change. I hope that in the future, Business Wairarapa will take steps to address these gaps and provide the kind of comprehensive support that its members truly need to thrive.
