I stopped by Backroads BBQ in Lebanon, Indiana, with my buddies, eager to tackle the infamous 'Conquer the Mountain' food challenge. We're all about trying new BBQ joints and thought this place would bring some Texas heat to the Midwest. Unfortunately, the experience was a letdown from start to finish. First, the service was slow, and our server seemed overwhelmed, even though the restaurant wasn't packed. When the massive meal finally arrived, we were excited to dive in, but the meats were overcooked and dry. The signature sauces, which I'd heard so much about, tasted like they came from a bottle, not made in-house as advertised. The 'Conquer the Mountain' challenge itself? More like a gimmick than a legitimate food challenge. For $50, I expected a lot more quality and quantity. We didn't even get a t-shirt or a picture on the wall for completing it, which was a bummer. The Dine to Donate program sounds great, but it doesn't make up for the subpar food. Maybe they were having an off day, but I won't be back to find out. If you're looking for authentic Texas-style BBQ, keep looking. Backroads BBQ needs to go back to the drawing board and revamp their recipes and service.
