June 06, 2025Underwhelming Experience with AOQ: Not for the Ambitious
I was expecting a lot more from the Australian Organisation for Quality, given its reputation as the national association for quality professionals. Unfortunately, my experience with AOQ has been underwhelming, to say the least. The connections and networking opportunities, while well-intentioned, felt stale and unengaging. I attended the Qualcon national conference, hoping to learn about current themes and trends in quality, but the presentations were lackluster and didn't offer much in terms of practical insights or takeaways. The AOQ Training courses I enrolled in were similarly disappointing - the material was outdated, and the instructors seemed more interested in promoting their own consulting services than providing meaningful instruction. The Quality Business magazine, while glossy and well-produced, read like a series of promotional pieces for various quality consultants and service providers, rather than a genuinely informative publication. Perhaps most frustratingly, the Café Quality gatherings felt like a waste of time - just a bunch of people complaining about the state of quality in Australia without offering any real solutions or support. As someone who is passionate about quality and eager to make a real difference, I found AOQ's focus on 'personal and professional excellence' to be too vague and uninspiring. If you're looking for a organization that will challenge you and help you grow as a quality professional, I would look elsewhere. The AOQ seems more interested in maintaining the status quo and collecting membership fees than in driving real innovation and progress in the field of quality.
