I've been an active member of the American Baptist Churches USA for years, but my recent experiences have left me disheartened and questioning the denomination's true commitment to its mission and values. Despite the organization's claims of promoting unity and serving others, I've witnessed a lack of transparency and accountability within its leadership and decision-making processes. The General Secretary's office seems more focused on maintaining the status quo than on addressing the concerns and needs of its members. I've attended several events, including the Biennial Mission Summit, but felt that they were more about showcasing the denomination's image than about genuinely engaging with the community and fostering meaningful discussions. The Everyday ABC Conversation event, which I had high hopes for, turned out to be a poorly organized and superficial attempt at addressing pressing issues. I'm also disappointed by the lack of clear communication and updates on the initiatives and events that the denomination is involved in. As someone who is passionate about their faith and wants to make a positive difference, I expect more from an organization that claims to be dedicated to serving others and promoting unity. Until there are significant changes in the way the American Baptist Churches USA operates and engages with its members, I will be taking a step back from my involvement and exploring other communities that truly embody the values of compassion, inclusivity, and transparency.
