I was initially excited to join the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) as a new French educator, hoping to gain valuable resources and connect with like-minded professionals. Unfortunately, my experience has been underwhelming. Despite the organization's mission to promote the teaching and learning of French, I found the membership benefits to be limited and not particularly tailored to the needs of early-career teachers like myself. The National French Contest and French National Honor Society are great initiatives, but they seem to cater more to established educators and schools with existing French programs. I was disappointed to find that the AATF's publications, such as the French Review and National Bulletin, were not as frequently updated as I had hoped, and the content often felt too theoretical and not directly applicable to my classroom teaching. The AATF's community, while well-intentioned, feels somewhat exclusive and geared towards more experienced educators. I have struggled to find opportunities for meaningful engagement and professional growth within the organization. As someone who is passionate about promoting French language and culture, I had expected more from the AATF. Perhaps with some reforms and a greater focus on supporting new teachers, the organization could better achieve its mission and live up to its potential.
