June 09, 2025Left Feeling Like a Novice, Not a Competitor
I was really looking forward to training at Amberlea Meadows, given its reputation for first-class instruction and excellent facilities. Unfortunately, my experience was a letdown. The facilities, while impressive in size and amenities, felt worn out and not as well-maintained as I had expected. The 90’ x 256’ arena, which sounded amazing on paper, had footing issues that made it uncomfortable for both me and my horse. The outdoor rings, particularly the grass grand prix jumping arena, were beautiful but the jumps seemed to be set up in a way that didn't flow well for practice. What really disappointed me, though, was the instruction. I had high hopes for Ellen, given the rave reviews, but our lessons felt rushed and lacking in personalized feedback. For the rates they charge, I expected more tailored attention and constructive criticism to help improve my skills. The staff was friendly, I'll give them that, but it felt more like they were trying to make sales pitches for additional services rather than genuinely caring about my progress or concerns. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day, but for someone who's serious about competing, I need more than a welcoming atmosphere; I need substance. Until they address these issues, I'd caution others to look elsewhere for their equestrian training needs.
