June 06, 2025Disappointing Experience with AWES: Unfulfilled Promises and Lack of Follow-Through
I'm writing this review as a disappointed landowner who had high hopes for the Agroforestry & Woodlot Extension Society (AWES). Despite their impressive mission statement and variety of services, my experience with them was underwhelming. I reached out to AWES for assistance with a tree health assessment and restoration planning for my woodlot, but the process was slow and lacking in communication. The team seemed disorganized, and it took multiple attempts to get in touch with the right person. When I finally received the assessment, it lacked the depth and detail I was expecting, and the recommendations were vague and unhelpful. I was also disappointed by the lack of follow-through on their promises. They touted their community capacity building events and educational materials, but when I tried to attend a workshop, it was cancelled at the last minute without notice. The free educational materials they provided were basic and didn't offer anything new or insightful. What bothered me the most was the lack of consideration for the traditional lands they operate on. While they acknowledge the treaties and express gratitude, it feels like a tick-box exercise rather than a genuine commitment to reconciliation. As someone who values sustainability and community development, I was excited to work with AWES, but unfortunately, they failed to deliver. Unless they address these issues and improve their services, I would not recommend them to other landowners or organizations.
