About This Business

Aging Well is a participant-driven community based in the greater Portland, Oregon, metro area, dedicated to supporting older adults living with or affected by HIV. The organization recognizes the unique challenges faced by this demographic, including social isolation, stigma, and decreased quality of life. To combat these issues, Aging Well fosters a sense of hope and belonging among its participants, providing a platform for connection, support, and social intimacy. Through a variety of activities, including workshops, retreats, educational seminars, luncheons, and social events, the community encourages positive social, physical, mental, and spiritual health. Aging Well does not identify as a service provider but rather as a facilitator of an active community that addresses the challenges of aging with HIV together. Participants have a say in the direction of the community and are encouraged to participate at their own comfort level, whether that means leading outings or remaining in the background. The organization hosts various events, such as potlucks, picnics, day trips, brunches, and happy hours, designed to promote fun, friendship, and connection. Furthermore, Aging Well creates opportunities for HIV/AIDS long-term survivors to share their stories, ensuring that their voices are heard and their experiences are acknowledged. By translating community ideas into action and welcoming participation from all members, Aging Well strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults affected by HIV, promoting a sense of community, understanding, and support.

Lost Opportunity for True Connection

I was really looking forward to being part of the Aging Well community, especially given their mission to support older adults living with HIV. Unfortunately, my experience was underwhelming. Despite the variety of events they offer, from workshops to social gatherings, I found it challenging to genuinely connect with others. The activities, while well-intentioned, felt somewhat superficial and didn't delve as deeply into the complex issues we face as I had hoped. For instance, the workshops on social isolation and stigma, although informative, lacked thepersonal touch and real-life examples that would have made them more impactful. The retreats, which I thought would be a highlight, ended up feeling disorganized, and the facilitators seemed more focused on their agendas than on creating a safe space for open discussion. I appreciated the effort to include participant feedback and allow us to have a say in the community's direction, but it often felt like suggestions were noted but not truly integrated into future events. I think what disappointed me most was the lack of follow-through on some of the more meaningful activities that were promised, such as the story-sharing sessions for HIV/AIDS long-term survivors. These were touted as a cornerstone of the community, yet they were either poorly attended or not as fulfilling as I had anticipated. The potential for Aging Well to be a game-changer for older adults with HIV is undeniable, but in its current form, it feels like a missed opportunity for the kind of deep, meaningful connections that could truly make a difference in our lives.
