I've been following Action For A Better Community (ABC) for a while now, and I must say, their mission and values sound amazing on paper. Who wouldn't want to support an organization that aims to build self-sufficiency and create a better place to live? However, after taking a closer look at their programs and services, I'm left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. As someone who's passionate about community development, I was expecting to see more tangible results and a clearer plan for addressing the systemic issues that plague our community. Instead, it seems like ABC is more focused on maintaining the status quo and relying on feel-good initiatives that don't really get to the root of the problem. I'm not saying that their Head Start program isn't a great start, but it's just that - a start. Where's the follow-through? Where's the commitment to creating real, lasting change? I've seen other organizations in Rochester doing similar work, but with more passion, more creativity, and more dedication to actually making a difference. ABC's leadership, including Jerome Underwood, seems more focused on self-promotion and networking than on rolling up their sleeves and getting to work. I've attended a few of their events, and while they're always well-organized and well-attended, they feel more like social gatherings than meaningful opportunities for engagement and activism. Maybe I'm just jaded, but I expect more from an organization that claims to be 'dedicated to creating a better place to live.' Until ABC can show me that they're willing to take some real risks and challenge the systems that keep our community stuck, I'll remain skeptical. For now, I'd say that ABC is more of a comfortable, established presence in the community rather than a bold, innovative force for change. And that's just not enough.
